Rise up. It’s time to become a man

Posted by Joshua Kagi on Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

One morning several weeks ago I woke up.
This isn’t astounding or anything since I’ve woken up every morning for 8,786 consecutive days now. However, something life changing happened. It wasn’t a revelation, or an ah-ha moment. I can’t point to the exact second it occurred, but I woke up that morning and I knew something: [...]

Reflections on cynicism & hope

Posted by Joshua Kagi on Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

DevilishDuck.com has a tagline. You may have noticed it before, or maybe you just don’t notice those types of things. For me, and I think most bloggers out there, we find taglines a way to showcase first time visitors what our writings are all about in just a few simple words. For me, “in a struggle between cynicism & hope” reflects who I am on so many different levels.

A great speech CAN put food on the table

Posted by Joshua Kagi on Friday, February 15th, 2008

With Hilary Clinton’s situation now dire after losing eight consecutive primary contests, she’s turned up the heat on Barack Obama. Since the American people are really buying into Obama’s populist message of hope, the only way to counter it is this…

Biblical Authority

Posted by Joshua Kagi on Thursday, January 10th, 2008

I’m going to have a moment of honesty with you here, and I’d bet that many of you would consider the following thoughts blasphemous. But if I can’t talk about it with friends, who can I talk about it with? I struggle with the thinking that the bible is an absolute authority.

Why I began to and continue to blog

Posted by Joshua Kagi on Tuesday, January 1st, 2008

Something has been on my mind today: Blogging.

A little bit of that thought was wondering what I was going to write today. I hate forcing a topic, so I usually don’t. If there’s a day I don’t have something to write, I won’t. But, today’s content wasn’t what was at the core of my thinking.

Instead I’ve been thinking about why I blog, why you blog, or why anyone blogs.

On life support

Posted by Joshua Kagi on Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

I love writing, I always have. It’s one of those “labors of love” that hardly seems like labor at all. I’ve journaled and then blogged for as long as I can remember. My online writing presence has existed for over ten years now.

My online writing has been in constant evolution. It began with a passion for college sports, shifted to the uber-personal journal style writing as I got into high school, evolved into the political and religious realms when I reached college, and has been a mix of all-the-above in the last year or so.

Part of my “problem” if we want to call it that, is that my interests are so varied it feels that I often have a lake of thoughts a mile-wide but only a few inches deep. I think this makes me a very well rounded person, but I hardly feel like an expert on any given topic. That makes it hard to blog and feel like you’re adding serious fodder to the global conversation.

I struggle with that a lot. I want to have an influence on the “global conversation,” but I’m just a random American kid (trying to become a man) who occasionally writes on current events. Lets face it, this blog is 99-percent catered to those who know me… and I’m okay with that… most of the time.

Because this blog is mostly a personal introspection into my life, my values and my thoughts, is a very key reason why I no longer blog the way I used to. With the rise of social networks, the need for the personal blog or website seems pointless when I can share a link, photos, and just update friends and acquaintances on my life there. Heck, even with my quick thoughts I used to blog about I can just post to twitter or update my status on Facebook.

Add to all the newer social tools the fact that my life is busier than it has ever been leaving no time for the longer essay format of most my posts, and the blog dies a slow, neglected death.

I really miss writing. I miss designing and tweaking too. I’m not sure what the future holds for my blog, but I hope on some level I can re-commit to sparking new life.

In the meantime, you can add me as your friend on Facebook, or follow me on Twitter.
