It may be the day before Valentines day, thus it seems a little late in the new year to be unveiling a “2008 list,” but this is my website, so I make the rules, right?
My personal goal for 2008 is to read 24 books for pleasure, doubling the 12 I completed in 2007. My hope is to be able to write at a minimum, a brief review on this blog of each book I read. (You can see my thoughts on The Irresistible Revolution here and here).

There are plenty more books on my reading list, but these are the books I’ve committed to read this year. If you have any suggestions for books I should add, feel free to send me an email. Any books listed above with the star symbol (*) are books I do not yet own, so if you’re in a giving mood feel free to buy me a book off this list, or my larger Amazon wishlist! Also, if you are an author or publisher and you’d be interested in sending me an advance copy of a book to read and review on this blog, you can contact me by email.
Random Reading Fun
On a somewhat different note, a couple weeks ago I was tagged by Jemila Kwon on her fantastic blog Quirky Grace, to participate in a new meme called 123, started by Erin at Decompressing Faith.
Here’s the rules:
- Pick up the nearest book of 123 pages or more. No cheating!
- Find Page 123.
- Find the first 5 sentences.
- Post the next 3 sentences.
- Tag 5 people.
I’m currently reading Peter Rollins, How (Not) to Speak of God, and it happens to be the closest book to me.
So here we go…
At that moment we, the teachers of the law and the Pharisees, brought in a woman caught in the sin of heresy.
We humiliated her by making her stand before the group, then we turned to Jesus and said, ‘Great teacher, this woman was caught perverting the law, spreading false witness and tainting the name of our God. Our law demands that we stone anyone who would so spoil the image of God.
I tag, Barbara, Rick, Ben, C. Wess Daniels, and Josh.

Ok, are you KIDDING me? ” woman, stoning, perverting the law, heresy, spreading false witness…” and you tag ME first on your list??????
But being the great sport that I am, I’ll still play….
I am just finishing up The Shack…..here are the next three lines after the first five lines on page 123….
“So then, ah, could you please pass me a bit more of those greens? So, then we’ve been seduced into this preoccupation with authority?”
“In a sense, yes!” responded Papa, passing Mack the platter of greens, but not letting go until he pulled twice. ”
I tag Anthony, Rick, Jason, Luke and…..hmmm….is Cat around these parts? If so, I tag Cat.
I’m still pissed off about the stoning thing though…
I’ll be on this later today or tomorrow.
@ C. Wess Daniels: Actually, I noticed that shortly after I posted this, you posted one on your blog that you’d been tagged to do by someone else. So, no need to do it twice.
Several of us from around the blogsphere are reading “Everything Must Change” together and discussing our thoughts. We’ve just begun, but we’ve set it up in a way where it’s never to late to participate.

Thanks Shane, I’ll be sure to check it out. I just only finished Everything Must Change about a week ago, so it’s still very fresh in my mind.
Josh - I hadn’t read your whole post when I saw the tag, I actually thought it was for a reading list for the year. So I may post some of the books I plan on reading anyways.
Hey if you’re a fan of Shane Claiborne and his book, then you should really check out the Another World is Possible DVD series. It’s a multimedia project by Shane Claiborne and Jamie Moffett (co-founders of the Simple Way) that emerged in response to their belief that things are not right in the world, and that they don’t have to stay that way. There are three DVD’s, one on war, one on poverty, and one on creation. You can find out more about them at http://www.awip.us.
Hi everyone.
Won’t say much.
Just love you guys.
Miss you.
