I’m taking a bit of a departure from writing up a full album in order to talk about a single song that I was recently re-introduced to. It was a song I heard plenty of times in my childhood as my mother was into all that 80’s pop rock crap.* The song, Mandolin Rain by Bruce Hornsby. I don’t know what it is about the song, but it just tugs at me. I think it’s because the song is how I view Suzie and my relationship. Somewhere deep down, I know that she’ll leave someday. We’ve both talked about it, so that I feel that way isn’t a shock to either of us. I hope that’s not the case, but even if it becomes so, every second with her has been worth it, and that’s why I love this song — it’s able to articulate all of that.
*by 80’s pop rock crap, I mean the greatest guilty pleasure music in the world, with the likes of Elton John, Phil Collins, and Billy Joel.

The last concert Shauna and I saw together was Bruce Hornsby at the Britt Gardens in Jacksonville (small town outside of Medford…). It was a great night. And this is a GREAT song that makes me think of her, and that night, every time I hear it. Isn’t it funny how different kinds of love are so different, yet soooooo the same?
(Have I mentioned that I miss Shauna????)
It absolutely is amazing how different kinds of love are different and the same. I’ve been learning a lot about love (not romantic) in the book I’m reading, “The Irresistible Revolution” by Shane Claiborne. In fact, I’m kind of in one of those idealistic utopian mindsets about peace, and unity and love. Part of it is how well Obama is doing (so far), part of it is Christians waking up and realizing that what we’ve been the last few years (decades? centuries?) hasn’t been what God wants us to be, and part of it is me just being a hopeless romantic. All this to come back to your point to say, yes, romantic love, and other kinds of love are so different and so the same — and as the Beatles song which concluded the movie “Across the Universe” that I saw last night says, “All you need is love.”
As I listened to Mandolin Rain lastnight, I listened with your ears in regards to your post about your relationship. I think I cried just as hard as when I listen w/ my own ears, thinking about the amazing friendship that Shauna and I shared.
John, Paul, George, and Ringo (some of my favorite theologians) were absolutely right - ALL you need is love.
~~~love you so~~~~
